" WORKS IN MARBLE, EMBLEM OF WEALTH AND PRESTIGE "

In the past, wealth and prestige of a people could be seen even by the pomp with which the churches were decorated. Key element, in this sense, was the use of marble as a material for landscaping. The importance of the marble can be seen as an element of prestige admiring all the churches have altars in painted plaster as if they were made of marble panels to show off the beauty of this precious mineral through painting techniques. The churches of Scilla almost all marble altars of different artistic styles. The church of Porto Salvo and that of Possess the St. Joseph Altar in white marble. Eighteenth-century architectural lines, and linear, but this altars own decorative elements in relief are very interesting. The Mother Church, with the work of artistic treatment, has been reassembled an altar in the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament. The latter, which is made entirely of marble antiques, striking for the beauty of the tabernacle. In it, the head of a cherub is carved above a canopy surmounted by a crown. The church of San Rocco has a son altar of neo-classical era of creation (1872) is striking for the variety for the tabernacle of marble and consists of a gable frame with white marble supported by four columns with Corinthian capitals. Finally, the altar of the church of the Holy Spirit is a jewel of Baroque art, which surrounds the beautiful painting of the Holy Spirit descending on the Virgin and the Apostles (F. Celebrano, 1799). What is most striking, however, is the wide variety of marble used. Suffice it to say that only to make the altar of the church of the Holy Spirit they have been used over ten different varieties! The marble must for all of our church is the white Carrara marble. The use of these marbles quality is due to the trade which was based on the economy Scilla. The Canon Giovanni Minasi writes for example that the boats were returning from trips Scilla commercial full of precious marble and valuable paintings. Another element of prestige for the churches was the presence of marble sculptures. We will own both of entire fragments. Than whole are:

1) the statue of the Immaculate Virgin, 2) the angel that is placed next to the same, 3) the bust of San Peter the Apostle, 4) the statue of San Rocco, 5) a small bust of dimensions depicting St. Anthony of Padua, 6) a Virgin and Child seated of small. The list of works in marble (statues and altars) could be much longer if there had been earthquakes and - especially - if it had not destroyed the Mother Church to rebuild it from scratch. By Don Mimmo had started a recovery. It 'been him who want to restore the statue of placing it inside the church thus saving it from "death" safe. E ', however, must resume as soon as this bad habit, again to avoid making serious mistakes such as having prevented from ever being able to admire the Mother Church as it was when it was considered the most beautiful of the entire Archdiocese, including the Cathedral itself!
